Foreword by Gordon Robertson, COO The Christian Broadcasting Netowork: I Am Cyrus: Harry S. Truman and the Rebirth of Israel (available April 22nd from LPC Books)

I first visited Israel with my father, Pat Robertson, in 1969, two years after the Six Day War. I’ll never forget being at the Western Wall and witnessing the sheer joy of people once again worshiping at the Temple and dancing with Torah scrolls. I was just eleven years old and I can't quite explain it, but I felt a bond to the place and the people of Israel. So, when my children turned twelve, I would take each of them on a trip to Israel to be baptized in the Jordan River and to pray at the Western Wall.

Some people seem to bond with Israel and some people seem to hate Israel. Regardless of your feeling, the birth of the modern state of Israel is one of the greatest dramas in history. No other people group has survived as a nation for 2,000 years in exile. Israel is proof that God keeps His promises.

When asked by the British Peel Commission if the Jews had a deed to the land of Israel, David Ben-Gurion held up the Bible that he had just used in swearing to tell the truth, and answered: “This is my document. It is the most highly-respected book. And I believe that you British respect it also. Our right in Palestine is not derived from the Mandate or the Balfour Declaration. It is prior to that. The Bible, which was written by us in our own language, in this very country, is our mandate. Our right in Palestine is as old as the Jewish people. We must have this land.”

In May of 1948, the British Empire ended their mandate and withdrew from Palestine. After decades of preparing, David Ben-Gurion stood in Tel Aviv and declared the establishment of the State of Israel. Hours later, President Harry Truman boldly led the United States to be the first nation to recognize the fledgling state. Jews around the world rejoiced and five Arab nations declared war.

One year after that first war, Israel’s Chief Rabbi, Isaac Halevi Herzog, met President Truman in the White House. The President asked if the Rabbi knew how he had been involved in Israel’s rebirth. The aged Rabbi looked intently at Truman and told him, “he had been given the task once fulfilled by the mighty king of Persia, and that he too, like Cyrus, would occupy a place of honor in the annals of the Jewish people.”

This book tells that epic story.

That is why I am pleased to endorse I Am Cyrus: Harry S. Truman and the Rebirth of Israel by Dr. Craig von Buseck. In this thoroughly researched and documented book, Craig tells this story, reaching back into antiquity to make the case for the presence of the Jews in their homeland, Eretz Israel.

I believe it is important for people everywhere to know the full story, and the truth behind the rebirth of Israel in the land the Romans renamed Palestine. This book shows how God’s hand was upon Israel at its rebirth and then you will see how his hand remains upon Israel today.
